Accessibility is part of the design.

From the start, NarraCam is designed for VoiceOver, large text and interaction through speech, haptics and clear spatial descriptions.

Our commitment

A camera app for blind and visually impaired people cannot assume that the screen is always being watched. Actions, status information and descriptions should remain understandable through VoiceOver and audio.

VoiceOver

Headings, focus management and meaningful labels for key controls.

Large text

Text and controls adapt to system settings.

Haptics

Captures, success and errors can also be signalled through touch.

Less motion

System preferences such as “Reduce Motion” and “Reduce Transparency” are respected.

What NarraCam supports

  • Live descriptions before capturing, rather than captions added afterwards.
  • Separate announcements for summaries, objects, visible text and risks.
  • Large, separate touch targets for capturing and describing.
  • Adjustable voice, speech speed and interval between announcements.
  • Layouts adapted for iPhone and iPad.
  • Interface and descriptions in German, English, French and Spanish.
  • Read the last description aloud again.
  • Open the camera, captures and settings with Siri and Shortcuts.

Learn how to hear descriptions of scenes and saved photos in the image description guide.

Feedback and known limitations

NarraCam is a prototype. Automated checks cover small displays, large text and iPad layouts. These do not replace complete everyday testing with VoiceOver and different vision, hearing and mobility requirements. Image descriptions may be incomplete or incorrect; the app does not replace a mobility aid.

If an element is hard to understand, inaccessible or not reliably announced by VoiceOver, we welcome specific feedback:
