What you need to get started
NarraCam is available as a TestFlight beta for iPhone and iPad. The app requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. Simple Description needs no additional AI model download. On-device AI requires a compatible device and a one-time model download.

Describe camera scenes before taking a photo
- Open NarraCam and allow camera access. Point the camera at the scene you want described.
- In Settings › Scene Description, choose Simple Description or, on a supported device, On-Device AI. For on-device AI, choose a profile and download its model.
- Use Describe to request a description. If you enable automatic scene descriptions, NarraCam also responds to detected changes.
- Listen to the description, then decide whether to take a photo or video. You can replay the last description.
The park path and wooden bridge audio examples let you read and hear descriptions of real photos.
Describe existing photos and hear them read aloud
You can import photos into the NarraCam library or send them to NarraCam from another app using the share sheet. Then open the saved photo, request a description and use the read-aloud feature. You can edit the description, date and location afterwards, search your library and share your photos.
Do image descriptions work without internet?
Yes. Simple Description uses local image signals such as brightness, movement, people and recognized text, without a model download. On-Device AI uses an additional model that you first download with an internet connection. After that, supported devices describe images locally without internet. Speed and detail depend on your device and model.
Optional iCloud storage is separate. If enabled, it can store photos and videos in your private iCloud and download originals when needed. This exchange with iCloud requires a connection; image descriptions are still processed on your device.
Use speech and VoiceOver
NarraCam is also designed for blind and low-vision people. Speech reads image descriptions aloud, while VoiceOver helps you operate the interface. You can adjust the voice, speech rate and interval between automatic announcements. The interface and descriptions support German, English, French and Spanish.
The accessibility page covering VoiceOver, large text and haptics explains supported features and the current testing status.
Limits of image descriptions
Descriptions may omit details or get them wrong. NarraCam does not replace a mobility aid. The beta is still being developed; automated checks do not replace full everyday testing with VoiceOver and different access needs.
